In 2024–2025, India’s rice procurement increases by 5% due to record output

India’s rice procurement reached 45.84 million tonnes as of February 28, a 5% increase from last year. The Kharif season rice production is estimated at a record 119.93 million tonnes. Key states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh reported higher procurement, while Punjab and Haryana saw a decline.

The Food Corporation of India (FCI) requires 41 million tonnes of rice annually for welfare schemes, and the government is confident in meeting demand. Higher rice procurement supports food security, particularly amid concerns over wheat supply.

States like Telangana, Odisha, and West Bengal saw significant growth, and the government has set a 7 million tonnes procurement target for the upcoming rabi crop. Higher rice procurement is critical for food security, particularly as wheat procurement remains uncertain.
