Gold Mutual Funds: Ban on New Investments?

What has happened?

Investors planning to invest in gold through mutual funds need to pay attention to an important development. Some mutual fund companies in India have temporarily restricted fresh investments in specific Gold ETF Fund of Funds (Gold FoF) schemes. These restrictions may affect new lump-sum investments, fresh SIP registrations, or additional purchases, depending on the scheme. However, this does not mean that all gold investments have been banned. The restrictions apply to specific schemes and are subject to the respective fund house’s official announcement.

Why have these restrictions been introduced?

Several fund houses have announced the restrictions amid increased investment flows into gold-related products and concerns about seasonal demand for precious metals. According to AMFI data reported in the media, Gold ETFs attracted approximately ₹4,450.61 crore in net inflows during September 2026, up from ₹2,596.70 crore in August. However, the fund houses have not all publicly stated a specific reason for their decisions. Reports suggest that the measures may be linked to concerns about gold imports, foreign exchange demand and pressure on the Indian rupee.

What happens to existing SIP investors?

Investors who already have SIPs running in affected schemes generally do not need to panic. Existing SIP instalments registered before the effective date are generally allowed to continue, and redemptions remain permitted, subject to the respective scheme’s terms. However, new SIP registrations, fresh lump-sum investments and switch-ins may not be accepted during the restriction period. Investors should check the latest official notice issued by their mutual fund company before making any changes to their investment plans.

Can investors still invest in gold?

Yes, investors can generally continue to buy Gold ETFs through the stock exchange using a Demat account, as the recent restrictions primarily concern specified Gold ETF Fund of Funds schemes rather than direct Gold ETF purchases. However, Gold ETFs also carry market risks, and their prices can fluctuate. Investors should not rush into gold simply because new investments in certain schemes have been restricted. Instead, they should consider their financial goals, investment horizon, risk tolerance and overall portfolio allocation before making a decision.
