Due to healthy demand and lifting curbs on non-basmati rice, India’s agri exports are expected to reach USD 50 billion in 2024-25. Export curbs on rice, wheat, and sugar impacted agri exports by about USD 6-7 billion.
However, removing rice curbs is expected to boost exports, with rice exports expected to reach 17-18 million tonnes this fiscal year. The main commodities registering healthy growth include fruits, vegetables, meat, beverages, and food processing.
The commerce ministry aims to increase agri exports to USD 100 billion by 2030. In October, the government removed curbs on overseas shipments of non-basmati white rice and exempted parboiled and husked rice from export duty.
The country exported non-basmati white rice worth USD 201 million during April-August this fiscal, down from USD 852.52 million in 2023-24. The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has disrupted the food chain supply chain.
