Risks to India’s wheat crop reduced due to Western Disturbance

The prospects for India’s wheat harvest have improved as the recent Western Disturbance brought good rains and snowfall to north and northwest India, allaying earlier concerns about weather-related damage, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. While no significant weather threats are expected, March is expected to deliver above-average temperatures. Moreover, the absence of severe cold and fog this season has helped stabilise crop conditions, with a fall in wheat yields likely to be minimal.

The IMD has forecast above-average temperatures over most parts of India in March, supporting these developments. Another Western Disturbance expected in early March is likely to further support wheat growth. Due to stable temperature trends, the 59% rainfall deficit in January-February had little impact.
