India’s completed steel imports have decreased by 11%, while exports have also suffered.

The amount of completed steel that India imported in April 2025 was 0.5 million metric tons, a decrease of 11.3 percent from the previous year. In addition, India’s completed steel exports saw a significant drop in the same month. India is the world’s second-largest producer of raw steel. A 12 percent levy on steel imports has been put in place by India to safeguard its steel industry against the dumping of cheap steel from China.

In April 2025, India brought in 0.1 million metric tons of Chinese-made finished steel. Indian imports of completed steel from China, in contrast, decreased by 26.5 percent in April. Despite reporting strong overall earnings and an increase in exports in its crude steel industry, China’s crude steel production decreased 7% in April compared to the previous month, defying expert growth projections.

In April, India imported 60% less finished steel from Japan year over year. In April, 85,600 metric tons of finished steel were imported from Japan.

The largest supplier of finished steel to India, South Korea, shipped 0.15 million metric tonnes of finished steel to India in April. Furthermore, South Korea’s completed steel imports to India increased 2.4% year over year in April.

In April, India produced 12.4 million metric tons of finished steel. In April 2025, India exported 0.4 million metric tons of finished steel, representing a portion of the entire production. In the month, the nation’s completed steel exports decreased by 25.7% on an annual basis.

India’s main export destinations, Italy and Belgium, imported less finished steel from India in April. In April, India exported 60.4 percent less finished steel to Italy year over year. Likewise, India’s exports of finished steel to Belgium decreased 6% year over year.
