Cumin prices rise due to short covering

Cuminous seeds rose by 0.4% to ₹24,990 due to short covering, with farmers holding about 35% of this season’s supply and carrying over of 2 million bags for the coming season expected. Exports are expected to pick up in November and December. At $3,050 per tonne, cumin is still very affordable, especially compared to Chinese cumin, which is $200–250 more expensive.

Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are further strengthening India’s monopoly in the cumin export market. This has increased demand for exports, especially from Europe and elsewhere, in line with the approaching holiday seasons. Cumin exports have increased by 128% year-on-year to 52,022 metric tonnes between July and September 2024. Total exports increased by 70.02% to 119,249.51 tonnes between April and September 2024. Notably, September exports increased significantly by 162.4342% over 162 and 162. Prices in the Unja spot market were down -0.04% to ₹24,935.7.
