Jeera prices rise on strong export demand

Jeera prices rose by 0.48% to ₹24,080 as major states Gujarat and Rajasthan, which are major producers of jeera, sowed the seeds late due to late sowing. As of November 25, jeera cultivation in Gujarat was recorded in only 57,915 hectares, a huge decline from 2.44 lakh hectares in the same period last year. Additionally, Rajasthan is expecting a 10-15% decline in sowing, which could reduce the overall production.

In 2023-24, India produced 8.6 lakh tonnes of jeera, compared to 5.77 lakh tonnes in the previous year. However, due to adverse weather conditions, production is expected to fall by 10% this year. Cumin in India is priced at $3,050 per tonne, while Chinese cumin is priced between $3,250 and $3,300.

As a result, cumin exports increased by 70.02% during the April-September 2024 period, compared to 1,19,249.51 tonnes in 2023. September 2024 exports increased by 162.34% year-on-year and 24.64% month-on-month, which led to a rise in the price of cumin in China, the Middle East and Europe.
