Due to tight supply of jeera and low export demand, jeera prices closed down by 1.1% at Rs 23,005. As a total of 27,300 bags of cumin arrived in Gujarat – a significant increase from the 24,000 bags received in the previous session – prices were forced to decline further. Due to delayed sowing in key producing areas, inflows from Rajasthan are still low, and the start of the new crop in Gujarat has been postponed by almost a month, which could lead to a short-term supply shortage.
Farmers have around 20 lakh bags of cumin, but only 3-4 lakh bags are expected to be traded by the end of the season, leaving around 16 lakh bags to be carried forward. Cumin exports increased significantly during the period from April to January 2025, compared to the same period last year, increasing by 66.98% to 182,167.70 tonnes.
