In the months of April through October of this fiscal year, India’s imports of coking coal increased 6% year over year to 28 million tonnes (mt) from 26.5 mt the previous year. During the seven-month period, supplies from Russia increased by almost 100% to 1.1 mt, according to statistics from trade sources and the Ministry of Steel.
Imports of coking coal from Russia during the same period last fiscal year totaled 0.53 mt. Despite the increase, the nation continued to supply coal in fifth place, behind Australia, the U.S., Canada, and Mozambique. The nation’s steel mills brought around 50 mt of coking coal into the country in FY22.
Russian imports increased by 128% in September over the same month last year, according to trade data that is currently accessible. During the months of April through October, deliveries from Australia, India’s main source country, fell 14% to 18.33 mt.
