SEBI has introduced a significant change to the Indian stock market by implementing a Closing Auction Session (CAS) for eligible Futures & Options (F&O) stocks from 3 August 2026. Under the new framework, regular trading in these stocks ends at 3:15 PM, followed by a 20-minute auction session. The official closing price is now determined through this auction instead of the previous Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) method. This reform is aimed at making the closing price more transparent, accurate, and resistant to market manipulation.
Earlier, the closing price of F&O stocks was calculated based on the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) of trades executed during the last 30 minutes of the trading session. While this method worked effectively in most cases, it was still vulnerable to large buy or sell orders placed near the market close, which could influence the final closing price. Since the closing price is used for index calculations, mutual fund valuations, ETF pricing, and derivative settlements, even small distortions could have a significant impact on market participants.
With the new Closing Auction Session, all eligible buy and sell orders are collected during the auction period and matched to determine a single equilibrium price that maximizes the number of shares traded. This process improves price discovery by reflecting genuine market demand and supply rather than the impact of a few last-minute trades. It also aligns India’s equity market with global exchanges that already use auction-based closing mechanisms to establish fair and efficient closing prices.
The new system is expected to benefit both retail and institutional investors by enhancing market integrity and reducing the possibility of end-of-day price manipulation. However, active traders, especially intraday and options traders, will need to adapt their trading strategies to the revised market timings and auction process. As India’s capital markets continue to evolve, this reform marks an important step toward improving transparency, investor confidence, and overall market efficiency.
