2024 trends pinch farmers; Maharashtra soybean area to drop by 2 lakh hectares

Maharashtra’s soybean cultivation area is expected to decrease by two lakh hectares due to poor returns on the produce last year. External factors such as the import of soybean cake as fodder and the government’s reluctance to purchase have dampened farmers’ interest in soybean cultivation.

Other factors include losses caused by irregular rainfall and delays in procurement by the government at the minimum support price (MSP), resulting in low earnings. Last year, soybean cultivation was on 52 lakh hectares in the state, but this time it is estimated to come down to 50 lakh hectares.

The Union government’s changing decisions on the import of soybean and allied products have caused fluctuations in domestic prices, affecting farmers. Despite the anticipated drop in soybean cultivation area, officials have assured farmers that both seeds and fertilizers are available in adequate quantities.

The government has aimed for food grain and oilseed production of 204.21 lakh tonnes this season and has made efforts to ensure a steady supply of high-quality inputs.
