Retail inflation in India decreased to 1.54% in September, the lowest level since June 2017.

According to figures published by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI), retail inflation in India fell precipitously to 1.54% in September 2025, the lowest level since June 2017. Price pressures for consumers are lessened by the dip, which is indicative of a general drop in food prices across all categories. The September inflation data are listed below.

In both rural and urban areas, inflation decreased. Urban headline inflation decreased from 2.47% to 2.04% in the same time, while rural headline inflation fell from 1.69% to 1.07% in September.

September’s food inflation rate of -2.28% indicated that food costs had decreased compared to the previous year. Urban food inflation was slightly lower at -2.47%, while rural food inflation was -2.17%. For the fourth straight month, food inflation has been negative, reaching its lowest level since December 2018.

While education inflation decreased marginally to 3.44% from 3.60%, urban housing inflation increased to 3.98% from 3.09% in August. A little decline was also seen in the health category, which came in at 4.34% as opposed to 4.40% in August. As a result of declining energy prices, inflation in transportation and communication decreased to 1.82% and in fuel and light to 1.98%.
