The government has begun buying 10,727 metric tonnes of wheat for the Rabi marketing season 2023–2024 as opposed to buying nothing last year, the food ministry announced in a statement on Tuesday. The food ministry noted in a statement that “according to the most current reports from FCI field offices, the recent rains have not severely affected the production of wheat.”
With more than 31 lakh farmers already enrolling this year for participation in public procurement activities of wheat, the wheat has been purchased in the Madhya Pradesh state in the regions of Ujjain, Dewas, Indore, Shajapur, and Sehore.
In contrast to the actual amount of 187.92 LMT of wheat purchased during the previous RMS 2022–2023, the government anticipates purchasing 341.50 LMT of wheat for RMS 2023–2024. The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare’s Second Advance Estimates states that this season’s wheat production will be around 112.1 million tonnes.
