Jeera prices fell by 0.32% to ₹23,360 due to delayed sowing in Gujarat and Rajasthan, impacted by higher temperatures. Gujarat, the largest producer, has only 57,915 hectares of sowing, below last year’s 2.44 lakh hectares and the normal cropping area of 3.81 lakh hectares.
India’s cumin seed production for 2023-24 increased to 8.6 lakh tonnes, but production is expected to decline by 10%. Rajasthan’s cultivation area is also expected to drop by 10-15%. Despite this, Indian cumin remains the cheapest globally at $3,050 per tonne, undercutting Chinese prices by $200-250 per tonne.
Exports during April-October 2024 rose by 77.37% to 135,450.64 tonnes, supported by strong demand from Europe and other global markets, especially amid Middle East tensions.
